When is the best time to have a baby? You may say that it is best to have a baby when you are financially set and have a decent amount of life experience under your belt. And I would not be able to say that you are wrong. However, the truth is that you are never “ready” for a baby, and at the same time the baby will teach you what you need to know, if you pay attention.
What does this have to do with architecture or engineering? Well both my kids were infants during the great recession. We had our first child knowing full well I had just left a salaried job and was starting out on my own to practice architecture. By the time we had the second one, we knew we had dubious and sporadic income and negative net worth. I have read that the number of births dropped dramatically during the great recession and the reason given is the financial uncertainty.
I do not regret the timing of my children. The fact that work was light granted me more time to spend on the babies. The tough financial times were masked by the focus we had on the kids. And neither child will remember any of the financial difficulties or stress. We built our family at the same time we built our business.
Definitely what kids want is not money. They do want stability, especially in the family, and secondarily in housing if possible. Mostly they want the love and attention of their parents.
